Articles - Sales & Marketing Trends - 2007

A summary of recent observations regarding the trends of sales and marketing tactics being deployed by businesses...

Referral Marketing is Up

More and more businesses are pro-actively initiating word of mouth tactics to generate sales opportunities. Senior people from both large and small businesses are implementing referral marketing tactics to generate sales leads. Many of these people are also receiving formal training on how to implement effective referral marketing strategies.

Running in parallel with this trend is the emergence of a growing number of on-line and off-line business networking organisations, e.g. 4networking, BNI, Lloyd’s TSB Breakfasts, LinkedIn, Ecademy, Business Referral Exchange, You & I, etc.

Advertising Spend is Down

Businesses are beginning to realise that traditional forms of advertising do not (always) work. They are therefore diverting their advertising budgets into other sales and marketing tactics. There is also a growing realisation of the importance of accurately measuring the return on investment made in advertising.

Direct Response Marketing is Up

More and more companies are using direct response marketing tactics whereby it is relatively easy to measure the return on marketing investment.

Internet Marketing is Up

Businesses are now realising how to use the internet and how they can receive a measurable return on their marketing spend. They are also using this route to open bigger markets which have previously been difficult to reach.

Education Based Marketing is Up

Many businesses are adopting an ’educational approach’ to their sales and marketing activity... for many businesses, positioning themselves as ’expert advisers’ is an extremely effective route to profitable sales opportunities.
